Logistics Inventory Management System

LIMS is the replenishment parameter calculcation application used at CERN.

LIMS consists of a set procedures and programs based on refined mathematical techniques to solve logistical problems, which have been developed by Dr. B. Schorr and Dr. M. Krever during 1994-1995. Optimal parameters are calculated based on a unique mathema-tical model. Concepts of probability theory have been applied to derive an accurate expression for the reorder point and safety stock quantity necessary to meet a predefined service level. Current development shows the mathematical model used is broadly applicable in logistics to a large number of situations, wherever stock is placed as a buffer between demand and supply.

During 1994 we were afraid that the standard functionality in TRITON to calculate replenishement parameters for the SIC method (Statistical Inventory Control) might be less performant than the methods used in the system we were replacing.

In order to evaluate the possible consequences on service level and stock holding of the standard TRITON functionality we developped a simulation tool that should simulate the consequences of the different strategies. We could do this since we had 7 years of details on the sales orders. While testing the simulation tool which also should serve to evaluate the possible other commercial packages, Mr. Krever tested some other new strategies, which looked sufficiently promissing to justify further study. This resulted in the end in the LIMS package.

The interface between LIMS and TRITON is kept very 'thin', LIMS receives demand and item data from TRITON, and returns the replenishment parameters.

LIMS main functions are:

     - demand forecasting
     - optimal replenishement parameter calculation
     - simulation of consequences of replenishment strategies
