Main activities:

I am providing support for operation, tuning and maintenance of the Oracle Database management systems used for all CERN's administrative applications.

My database administration tasks include:

  • Creation and maintenance of all databases required for development, testing and production
  • Performing the database capacity planning
  • Performing ongoing tuning of the database instances
  • Installation of the new versions of the Oracle RDBMS and its tools and any other tools that access the Oracle database
  • Planning and implementation of the backup and recovery procedures for databases
  • Controling migrations of programs, database changes through the development life cycle
  • Implementing and enforcing security for all of the Oracle Databases
  • Performing database re-organisations as required to assist performance and ensure maximum uptime of the database
  • Putting standards in place to ensure that all application design and code is produced with proper integrity, security and performance
  • Evaluating releases of Oracle and its tools, and third party products
  • Providing technical support to application developers
  • Enforcing and maintaining database constraints to ensure integrity of the database
  • Assisting with impact analysis of any changes made to the database objects
  • Troubleshooting with problems regarding the databases, applications and development tools
  • Managing sharing of resources amongst applications

History

I started to work at CERN in January 1995 as a technical student in AS-DB group. In August 1996 I became a staff member. From year 1999 I was working for AS-SAS group.

As from 1st of August 2003 I was working for AS-CIS group. After CERN reorganization which took place on 1st of January 2004 the group was placed in IT department and called IT-AIS.
